Technology can spark new knowledge, connection, and access, but what happens when it sparks fear? How does identity and privilege play a role in the way fear emerges? In this talk, Lauren will illuminate the seven types of fears evoked in technology patterns today, based on two years of research and synthesis. We'll look at how we can recognize and work to alleviate these fears, and ultimately, invite more dialogue in the workplace towards more sensitive and compassionate technology.

Our Speaker: Lauren Celenza
Lauren Celenza (she/her) is a designer, speaker, and writer shaping technology towards more inclusion, reason, and resilience. She currently serves as a Design Lead at Google Maps and is a member of the Alphabet Workers Union. Throughout her time at Google Maps, she led a redesign towards making navigation inclusive for motorbikes across 40 countries and worked with local teams in Lagos, Nigeria to map out public transportation routes for the first time in Google Maps history. Prior to Google, she designed for a number of tech startups, nonprofits, and civic organizations, including The Gates Foundation and Citizen Schools. She also co-published Tilting the Lens, a book that documented the preservation of Sham Shui Po, a historic neighborhood in Hong Kong. Her work has appeared in Forbes, The New York Times, BBC, and Quartz.
